Rain, rain go away

 It is raining very heavily as I am writing my blog this week. The first thing the children said was it would be good to help our plants grow. I think they are right but I do hope it doesn't last all weekend.

This week the children have been learning about their senses, hearing, sight, taste, touch and smell. We have played blindfold games allowing the children to use their senses to navigate. We have also used our feet to feel different textures and temperatures. The children have learnt so much and have enjoyed all the activities. We have learnt how to describe our friends in different ways. They have learnt how to observe and describe how their friends look but also what that person is like. Please encourage your child to do this at home, it is a good way of using language and also it helps children to observe personalities.

You should all have received an email with our transition information. Please speak to me if you have any concerns. I do want to reassure you that your children are well established in the setting and they will still be with us in September so nothing will really change.

Releasing into the wild

 This week the children have learnt about responsibilities as we have released our butterflies and our tadpoles into the wild. They have observed the changes in the life cycle over a period of time and they have a good understanding of what happens next. It has been an exciting time and the children were a little sad to let them go. We have talked about life cycle's in other living creatures including ourselves. Please can you send in a photo of your child when they were a baby. This can be through email if you prefer. Please don't send in a precious photo as we would like the children to be able to handle and compare themselves from being a baby to now.

We are now beginning our transition process so that the children will be comfortable moving into their next year group. This also includes children going to other schools. The children who are staying with us will have a natural transition as they will be staying in the same setting, other children will be moving onto new schools and I will be contacting their teachers in the coming weeks. If you have any concerns about this process please email me.

As the weather has finally turned a corner can you make sure you child has a hat and some sun cream on.

I have made a huge mistake this week and deleted all the photos from the camera before saving them, sorry.

 We have had so much going on in nursery this week. Our caterpillars are changing and our tadpoles are getting bigger. I think the children will notice a big difference after the holiday.

The children have enjoyed learning about dinosaurs and seem to know more about them than we do, especially their names. We have used this topic to support math's and literacy with lots of exciting activities. 

We have also found a dinosaur egg and we are all so excited to see what happens to it. The children may talk about a dinosaur that came to visit the setting, his name was Brodie. They were very excited about this so I have attached the news article so that you can share the excitement with them.

Life Cycles

 I am sorry I have not been around this week as I have been isolating but I will be back in the setting on the 27th. I have been keeping tracks on what the children have been doing and it sounds like they have had a great week. Our caterpillars are now big and are beginning to build their cocoons. The children are very excited about this and are looking forward to the next stage in the cycle. They have been sequencing the life cycle of the butterfly and have produced some great work. Miss Chandlers has displayed this in the room so that the children can see what they have made. We have also had a delivery of frogs spawn which we are going to be observing over the next couple of weeks. The nursery is full of excitement with new life emerging all around us.

Our hungry caterpillars

 This week we have our own hungry caterpillars that we are looking after. The children have been monitoring their growth and movements daily. They are  aware of the lifecycle of the butterfly and  have enjoyed making stories and pictures, making sure that they sequenced the cycle correctly. We look forward to seeing their progress and sharing some photos with you along the way.

The children used magnifying glasses to look closely at the caterpillars.

This week we have also been looking at flowers and we have used our observational skills to draw what we could see.

The children used lots of different resources to represent the Camellia flowers.

Below is a link to a survey that our school is taking part in. The older children are completing the survey in school but we feel that the younger children will need their parents support to  answer the questions. Please could you spend some time completing this survey this weekend.

 Last month launched the largest survey ever of children in England, “The Big Ask”. The views and experiences children share with us through “The Big Ask” will help us to shape our forthcoming Childhood Commission, which will set out plans for how we make sure children are at the heart of rebuilding after the pandemic.

 

I am very pleased to say that hundreds of schools have taken part and that thousands of children across the country have already completed the survey. I am particularly keen to hear from more primary school children and would be very grateful if you could encourage as many of your students to take part as possible at thebigask.uk.

REMINDERS

Please can you make sure that your child does not come to school in nail polish and also no earings should be worn. Please speak to me if you have any queries about this.

Next week is walk to school week and we would encourage you all to try and get the children to walk, scoot or cycle to school.

THE WINDY DAY

 What a change to the weather this week. We started the week with a very windy day and a mystery that the children needed to investigate. OUR TENT WAS MISSING!

The children noticed on Tuesday morning that the tent had disappeared. We decided to find out what had happened and made a list of where they thought it might be. Zac thought the tent had gone to the seaside and Leo thought it had gone to Australia. Olivia said that the wind had blown it to Gobians Forest. We decided to go for a walk around the grounds to see if we could find it.

The children looked down the road but could not see it.

They searched around the football pitch but still it could not be found.

Suddenly they noticed something blue flapping in the wind.

Miss Chandler untied it from the fence. The wind was very strong.

It blew all the children over, even Miss Chandler. We were all very happy that we had found our tent.

This was such an exciting day with so many learning opportunities. The children were completely absorbed in the excitement. In Early Years we always try to plan activities around the children's interests. When something so simple as a windy day arrives we all get very excited.

This allowed us to create stories, paintings, drawing and most of all it allowed the children to think creatively and problem solve. 

We used a story map to sequence the events of the day and this encouraged the children to start writing and coming up with their own ideas.

 I wonder what the weather will bring us next week????????
